How each-way bets work
An each-way bet is really two equal bets: half your stake on the horse to win, and half on it to finish in the places. So a £10 each-way bet costs £20. The win half pays at the full odds; the place half pays at a fraction of the odds — commonly 1/4 or 1/5 — for finishing inside the paid places. If the horse wins, both halves pay out; if it only places, just the place half does; if it finishes out of the places, the whole bet loses.
The number of places and the fraction depend on the race and the bookmaker — big-field handicaps often pay more places, and "extra place" offers can add value. More on that in our each-way guide and do extra places pay?
