The Punchestown Festival at the end of April closes the National Hunt season in style: five days of high-class racing headed by a string of Grade 1s, where Cheltenham and Aintree form is confirmed or overturned. It's the championship meeting of Irish jump racing and a fitting end to the winter.
Punchestown is a galloping right-handed course with a stiff finish that rewards stamina and class, so it tends to suit thorough stayers that jump well and see out their trip strongly. Coming so soon after Cheltenham, freshness and how hard a horse ran at the Festival are worth weighing; some peak here having been aimed at the meeting all along.
