The Irish Derby at the Curragh, run at the end of June or start of July, is Ireland's most prestigious Flat race — a mile-and-a-half Classic for three-year-olds that often brings together the principals from the Epsom and French Derbys. It's a genuine championship test and a highlight of the European middle-distance season.
The Curragh is a wide, galloping, undulating right-handed track with a stiff finish, so it rewards a true mile-and-a-half stayer with class and a strong pedigree — a fairer, more galloping test than Epsom's switchback. Epsom Derby form, and the leading yards' three-year-olds, are the natural guides.
