Run at Aintree each April, the Grand National is the most famous horse race in the world: a marathon handicap chase over roughly four and a quarter miles and 30 unique fences, including the fearsome Chair and Becher's Brook. It's a national event that draws a huge once-a-year audience, and its scale makes it unlike anything else in the calendar.
The National rewards a specific type: a thorough stayer that jumps boldly and accurately, travels within itself early, and — crucially — enjoys a slice of luck avoiding fallers and loose horses. Modifications to the fences in recent years have made it safer and slightly less of a lottery, so genuine class and stamina increasingly tell. Weight, age and prior staying-chase form are the classic pointers; sheer distance means the finish is often about which horse is still galloping.
