The Cheltenham Festival is the pinnacle of the jumps season: four days each March where the best hurdlers and chasers in Britain and Ireland meet to settle the year's championships. The atmosphere — and the famous 'Cheltenham roar' as the tapes rise for the opening race — is unmatched, and the Anglo-Irish rivalry gives every renewal an edge.
The track is the key. Cheltenham is a stiff, undulating, left-handed course with a long, testing climb to the line, so stamina and class win out over speed — horses that jump economically and stay strongly up the hill are the ones that deliver. Ground is central too: it can ride genuinely soft in March, and proven form on testing going is a strong pointer. Festival form, even from beaten horses in these ultra-competitive races, reads well year after year.
